On y distingue l'intervention physique de l'artiste : les traces de brosse, les raclages, les empreintes qui façonnent la matière. C'est dans ce geste que le bleu révèle sa polysémie, passant de l'aplat mat et intense à la brillance presque translucide.

Lithography, flat by nature, is here subverted by the energy of Soulages's gesture. The artist's physical intervention is visible — brush marks, scrapings and imprints that shape the material. Through this gesture the blue reveals its many meanings, shifting from an intense matt flat tone to an almost translucent sheen.
