Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) formed with Max Ernst one of the most beautiful and famous "surrealist couples".
Considering herself primarily as a surrealist painter, she used stricto sensu the language of surrealist representation. But quickly, in the first part of the 1950s, her work changed radically. As she explains, “around 1955, my canvases literally shattered… I broke the mirror, you could say. “: She then becomes one of the first women who dares to reverse the erotic point of view in art. Her paintings then expressed the fantasies of the woman, considered as an individual in her own right and no longer only as the projection of the desire of man (the women who gravitated around the surrealists were almost all linked to the painters as muses, companions or wives and had to correspond to the aesthetic and mental criteria specific to the movement, beautiful, fascinating, available and without inhibitions). Among the most famous, Lee Miller, Léonor Fini, Leonora Carrington, Dorothea Tanning will make their revolution by emancipating themselves and re-inventing their artistic language whose originality and importance are finally brought to light thanks to the stubborn work of researchers and researchers, historians, curators, the different perspective of a new generation of amateurs and collectors.
