En 1978, Pierre Alechinsky sollicite E. M. Cioran pour accompagner ses lithographies de quelques aphorismes. L’écrivain lui en adresse quinze ; le peintre en retient quatre pour composer Schismes. Cette collaboration ne repose pas sur une relation d’illustration : les textes et les images conservent leur autonomie tout en entrant en résonance. Aux formes libres et métamorphiques d’Alechinsky répond l’écriture fragmentaire et paradoxale de Cioran. Leurs deux langages se rejoignent dans un même goût pour la rupture, l'ambivalence et l'absence de conclusion.

In 1978 Alechinsky asked E. M. Cioran for a few aphorisms to accompany his lithographs; the writer sent fifteen, and the painter kept four for "Schismes". Not an illustration: texts and images remain autonomous while resonating, Alechinsky's free, metamorphic forms answering Cioran's fragmentary, paradoxical writing in a shared taste for rupture and ambivalence.
