Warhol's portfolio Space Fruit: Still Lifes demonstrates his experimentation with the classical tradition of still life painting, but with a Warhol twist. Warhol wanted to recreate imagery from the popular historical movement, and chose to represent different series of fruits. Still lifes, by their very nature, are carefully choreographed images, focusing on shape, color, space and symbolism, while simultaneously showcasing the virtuoso of the artist. By integrating this historical genre into his unique pop art aesthetic, Warhol interrogates the role that art plays in society.
