Note: The lithograph is based on an oil painting by Picasso from 1924 that is now in the collection of the Pompidou Centre in Paris and previously as in the collection of Maurice Meunier. The work shows a delectable charlotte cake. This work perfectly combines Picasso's defined geometric forms with soft, swirling strokes. With great fluidity of line, Picasso defines each object within this still life. The sense of abstraction stems from the blocks of colour that divide the composition. Dark and light greys juxtapose against periwinkle blues and muted browns, creating a sharp sense of contrast; despite the slight disjuncture caused by these colour variations, the composition as a whole retains a great sense of unity and balance. Of particular note is the patterned wallpaper to the left, which further contributes to the welcoming aura of this piece.
