Salvador Dalí (1904–1989)
Le Bestiaire de La Fontaine Dalinisé, 1974
Complete portfolio of 12 original drypoint engravings with pochoir colouring
Published by Robert Mouret, Éditions des Maîtres Contemporains, Paris
This work is a rare Artist’s Proof (E.A.), printed on Japan paper, representing one of the most desirable states of this important Dalí portfolio.
The portfolio comprises twelve original drypoint engravings with pochoir in colours, each signed in pencil by Salvador Dalí, printed with full margins and issued loose, as published, in the original portfolio. The impressions are strong, with well-defined plate marks and exceptionally rich pochoir colouring.
Edition:
The standard edition was issued on Japan paper, Arches paper, and Auvergne paper. In addition, a very limited number of Artist’s Proofs (E.A.) were printed outside the numbered edition and reserved for the artist, the publisher, and close collaborators. Artist’s Proofs on Japan paper are significantly rarer than standard numbered copies.

Paper and technique:
Japan paper is particularly prized for its refined surface and tonal depth, allowing the pochoir colours to appear noticeably more vivid and saturated than on standard papers. The drypoint lines retain excellent burr and clarity, characteristic of high-quality atelier impressions.
Condition:
All twelve prints are in very good to excellent condition, with clean margins, strong impressions, fresh colours, and no foxing or staining. The portfolio is complete and well preserved.
Summary:
This Artist’s Proof on Japan paper represents a superior and scarce example of Le Bestiaire de La Fontaine Dalinisé, combining exceptional print quality, strong visual impact, and limited availability. A highly collectible Dalí portfolio.
